The Invisible Audience: How to Feed the Bots and Win at Long-Term Online Reputation Management

There's a concept in psychology called the illusory truth effect — the phenomenon where repeated exposure to a statement makes it feel true, regardless of its accuracy. Advertisers have exploited it for decades. Now, without meaning to, so have large language models.


Here's what every modern communicator needs to understand: AI doesn't just find information about you or your brand. It synthesizes it. And synthesis is where reputation lives or dies.


The Search Paradigm Has Shifted

When someone Googled you five years ago, they got a list of links. They made their own judgments. Today, they're increasingly likely to ask ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude a question — and receive a confident, conversational answer that feels authoritative, even when it's directionally wrong or simply outdated.


That answer is built from a training corpus — web content, news articles, forum discussions, press coverage — weighted by volume, recurrence, and source credibility. Which means the old SEO game has a new dimension: you're not just optimizing for discoverability. You're training the model's mental model of you.


This is the reputational challenge of our moment.


What LLMs Are Actually Doing to Perception

LLMs don't have opinions, but they produce outputs that feel like opinions. When a model describes a company as "known for controversial labor practices" or a person as "a polarizing figure in the industry," it's pattern-matching from its training data — but the reader receives it as editorial truth.


As a communications professional, I think about this through a behavioral economics lens. Humans are cognitive misers. We rely on heuristics to make sense of information overload. An AI-synthesized summary exploits exactly that tendency: it feels pre-processed, authoritative, and trustworthy precisely because it sounds like a neutral third party.


The illusory truth effect kicks in again. Repeated AI outputs — whether about a person, a company, or a product — begin to shape ambient perception, even when nobody consciously registers the source.


How to Feed the Bots (Intentionally)

This isn't a reason to panic. It's a reason to evolve your strategy. The communicators who win in the AI age aren't the ones who understand AI best — they're the ones who understand what the model is hungry for and feed it deliberately.


Audit your AI footprint first. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity about your brand or yourself. What narrative are they surfacing? What's missing? What's wrong? This is your new baseline — and it's more important than your Google Analytics dashboard.


Think in themes, not just placements. Earned media strategy has always been about volume and credibility — but now it's also about thematic repetition. The narratives that appear consistently across multiple authoritative sources are the ones that shape model outputs. Ask yourself: what three things do you want any LLM to know about you in five years? Work backward from there.


Prioritize primary sources. Owned content — your website, published thought leadership, bylines — is crawlable, citable, and reinforces the narrative you want training data to carry forward. Think of every piece of owned content as a deposit into a long-term reputational account the bots are managing on your behalf.


Flood the zone with accuracy. If a model is surfacing inaccurate or outdated information, the fix isn't to contact the AI company. It's to create a volume of well-sourced, high-authority content that gives the model better material to pattern-match from. You're not correcting the bot — you're outfeeding the bad data.


The Communicator's New Mandate

The rise of generative AI doesn't make communications less important. It makes it more consequential — and more psychologically complex. We've always known that perception precedes reality. We've always worked to shape narrative.


Now, we're shaping it for an audience that never sleeps, never forgets, and synthesizes at scale.


The communicators who understand this — who think about LLM search and AI reputation management as proactively as they think about traditional media strategy — are the ones building reputations that are legible, accurate, and durable in the AI age.
